My Pediocactus simpsonii are getting ready to bloom

Pediocactus simpsonii with flower buds
Pediocactus simpsonii, Torrey, Utah

Second watering of 2026 for my Pediocactus simpsonii. It is one of my favorite species. The many variations allow you to build a large collection without ever having two identical plants. It grows easily on its own roots and starts its growth in late February/early March in my Glâne region climate in the Canton of Fribourg, Switzerland.

I took the opportunity to water them as about ten sunny days are forecast. The buds are swelling quickly and the plants are plumping up again. I grow them in a pure mineral substrate composed of volcanic rock, pumice, and zeolite.

They are placed in my greenhouse near the door, which is fitted with netting so they receive maximum ventilation. This is the first time I have placed some of them in the greenhouse to compare their growth with the others that I keep in my cold frame. As expected, these are slightly ahead, since temperatures in the greenhouse can already reach 30°C on sunny days, even though it still freezes in the morning.

These conditions are in no way negative for this species, contrary to what one might think.

I describe my cultivation method on the page dedicated to Pediocactus on my website. Feel free to take a look you might be tempted by this very interesting genus.
